A field is a container for text(a text box if you like). A BackGround Field will appear on each card on a BackGround, but the text will vary from card to card.
Other BackGround objects, buttons and graphics, will be exactly the same on each BackGround. More Info PopUp Window

First we set the EditBackground to true, by either choosing BackGround from the Edit menu,
Or using the Button on at the top of the Tools palette. Clicking on 'Card'
Changing it to 'bkgnd' (background)
Any objects now created will go on the BackGround Layer.
To create a field we click on the scrolling field on the tools palette, you may need to open the Field section of the palette,by clicking on the disclosure arrow beside the Field label:
And drag out a field at the top of our window:
